Atlas introduction

Thresher Sharks

Located on Malapascua Island at the northern tip of Cebu, The Shark’s Tail is a relaxed dive resort built around one of the most famous shark dives in the world.

Divers come here for a rare experience — early morning encounters with thresher sharks rising from the deep at cleaning stations offshore.

The Shark’s Tail offers a welcoming base for exploring these waters, combining a professional dive center, comfortable accommodations, and an easygoing island atmosphere.

Why Divers Come Here

Malapascua is one of the only places on Earth where thresher sharks can be reliably seen by scuba divers.

At sunrise, divers descend onto cleaning stations where these elegant sharks glide in from the deep to be cleaned by reef fish.

What makes Malapascua special:

• Reliable thresher shark encounters
• Early morning deep-water cleaning stations
• Macro life and reef diving nearby
• Island-style diving with small boats
• Relaxed, community-driven dive culture

Divers often describe this as one of the most unique shark dives in the world.

Dive Environment

Signature Dive Site: Kimud Shoal
Depth:
10–30 m (65–130 ft)

Conditions:
• Dawn dives
• Clear blue water
• Moderate current
• Advanced experience recommended

Typical Dive Plan:
• Leave the island before first light
• Descend into the deep blue over the shoal
• Wait calmly near known shark routes
• Stay still as threshers appear from the dark

There’s a special kind of suspense at Kimud Shoal. The ocean feels vast, silent, and full of promise — and the sight of a thresher shark sweeping past makes every second of waiting worth it.
